Yesterday, we brought you a “Take 5″ with Galia Katz of Plomo shoes. Today, as promised, we are bringing you an exclusive interview with her Plomo co-founder Keltse Bilbao. Keltse grew up in Spain and lives on the Upper East Side of New York City. She loves shoes and considers she and Galia to be perfect examples of the “Plomo woman.” We got Keltse to “Take 5″ for ShoesTV.

(Keltse Bilbao, left, and Galia Katz)

How did you become a shoe designer?

I have always been a shoe addict. I love shoes! Galia and I were friends before we became partners and we had the idea of creating a shoe brand. That is how we became shoe designers.

Galina

What is your background?

I grew up in Bilbao, Spain. I studied economics in Spain and worked in communications for four years. Then I decided to move to New York City and to follow my dream and to do what I really loved, which is fashion. I lived in different countries such us Belgium, London, Mexico City and Miami before ending up in New York City again. Four years ago, I opened a multi-brand store in Mexico City. Now I’m finishing my Master’s Degree at the Fashion Institute of Technology and working really hard to take Plomo to the next level.

Susana

What inspires you in your designs?

Food, people and art. I get inspired when I travel to different countries.

Catalina

How did Plomo begin?

With a cup of coffee in Mexico City! Galia and I decided to make some samples and to give it a try. Two months later, we had our first order from a department store in Mexico City!
Michaella

If you were going on a trip around the world, what 5 pairs of shoes would you pack?

1. A very nice pair of oxfords.
2. Wedge boots like the Veronique boots from our new collection.

3. Sexy high heel booties
4. Flat sandals.
5. Unfortunately, some very comfortable sneakers (I hate them but I guess I need some for the trip).

Plomo shoes popped up on my radar on a random shoe-gazing Google search and kind of took my breath away. The shoes are unique and sexy, yet look comfortable. After some research, I found out that the company was run by two women, Galia Katz and Keltse Bilbao. In between designing and jet-setting, the ladies stopped for a moment to “Take 5″ for ShoesTV. Today we will hear from Galia, tommorow from Keltse.

Galia Katz grew up in Mexico City and studied fashion and textile design. She started modeling in school. Upon graduating, she headed to Paris to study French and then moved to Barcelona, Spain to work and model. When she decided to start making shoes, she simply began sketching shoes and found a manufacturer, learning the craft along the way.

How did you become a shoe designer?

I actually started in the shoe business importing Spanish shoe brands to Mexico. I was very successful until the Euro started getting so strong and expensive. The whole buying in Euros and selling in Pesos became unthinkable. I decided to make my own shoes and Plomo was born. First I did it on a very small scale, selling to small boutiques in Mexico. When I decided to go mainstream and export the brand to the United States, I invited Keltse into the project.

What inspires you in your designs?

Everything. Every day I see things that inspire me. People on the streets, traveling, music, books and women I admire inspire me. Usually when we design we are thinking about what we would love to wear.

How would you describe Plomo shoes?

They are shoes made for a fashion-oriented woman who is practical, strong and sexy.

When shopping for shoes for newborns, style probably isn’t your first concern. Well, Toe Jamm Shoes is about to change that. Designers Yasmina Cadiz and Amanda Real just launched this line for infants (age 0-12 months) and, boy, do they have a refined style.

Cadiz and Real’s inspiration for the line came when they couldn’t find a suitable baby shower gift for a mutual friend. With Real’s fashion design background and Cadiz’s interior architecture education, they knew they could come up with a custom, chic pair of “first shoes” for a baby. Their mutual love for music inspired the name Toe Jamms.

Designers Yasmina Cadiz and Amanda Real

Although the ladies knew each other for years, they had the opportunity to work together for Calleen Cordero. Real had worked for Cordero as her handbag designer for 3 years, and when Cadiz was brought on for the rebranding effort for the brand in 2010 as Creative Director and Photographer, the ladies shared a creative chemistry. They were so inspired by working for Calleen Cordero, that you’ll notice a special shoe on their website titled “The Cordero Slip-On.”

Both designers still have their first pair of shoes. They want to make sure their tiny handcrafted shoes are seen differently than average baby shoes which are usually considered disposable once a baby grows out of them. They hope that mothers and children will want to have their shoes as a keepsake forever.

The shoes are made to be worn in the child’s first year of life. Although they have a pre-designed collection, each shoe will have traces of its maker and you can even opt to further customize by adding the child’s name to the satchel the shoes will be sold in. Instead of using boxes they decided to sell the shoes in an environmentally friendly signature satchel that adds a more personalized flare, with or without the child’s name.

Friends and family got a sneak preview of the line at a launch party in LA on September 17th. Cadiz’s brother-in-law, Chef Bill Kim, even flew all the way from Chicago to serve as the official chef of the event.

The site just launched TODAY and we suggest you get a pair soon before all the celeb mamas around town snatch them up. ShoesTV heared that Rachel Zoe’s baby Skylar was the first to own an official pair of Toe Jamms!

Munoz trained at the famous ARS Arpel Institute of Shoes and Accessories and Design in Milan. He draws inspiration from the artisanal work of Italian shoe designers of the 1930s and 1940s who created shoes before mass industrial production existed. His current line of shoes is inspired by the silver screen starlets of the golden age of cinema. We got Abel Munoz to “Take 5″ for ShoesTV.

What inspired you to become a shoe designer?

I’ve been interested in accessories design and all facets of design all of my life. Since I can remember, footwear design has always been on my mind. I guess I always wanted to design shoes.
Elizabeth

How did your studies in Italy impact your design philosophy?

As I continue to expand, develop and produce collections in Italy, my work is influenced by spending time and working with my Italian teams season after season. The collections are entirely made in Italy and focus on the highest standard of quality materials. The impeccable construction, workmanship and in-depth attention to detail is unparalleled.

What is your background?

I am Latin American. I was born in Costa Rica. I moved to Canada at the age of 21. I started studying Fashion Quality Control in Costa Rica and finished my schooling as a Graphic Designer in Toronto, Canada.

What kind of woman do you see in your shoes?

The type of woman that I design for is the woman who wants to be different and is strong and independent. She is not afraid of investing money in something new, unusual and fashion-forward.

Tell me about the current line. How did you pick classic movie stars as an inspiration?

The Fall\Winter 2011 collection is inspired by the classic silver screen’s female stars. These leading ladies played a role in the women’s movement and were key to the evolution of fashion. Each sparked trends that influenced generations to come.

If you were packing for a trip around the world, what 5 pairs of shoes would you bring?

If you are a b-ball fanatic, we know you will be rushing to stores to get your hands on these sneaks which are exclusively designed for D.Rose. The shoes feature Sprint Web that reduces weight and increases comfort. They also have Sprint Frame technology in the external heel counter that allows for stability and motion control. The gore ankle strap keeps the sneaks locked in place. Derrick’s ankle injury is kept in check by the adiZero Speedwrap ankle wrap. The herringbone material and traction pattern on the bottom of the shoes provide great grip and are a perfect match for Derrick’s signature fast playing style.

Apart from being useful on the court, the shoes also have some killer design details. The tongue of the shoe displays the words “All Flights Cancelled” while the sock liner features a list of NBA cities as destinations on an airport status board. All flights are canceled except for the one that is “Cleared for Flight” to Chicago which represents how D. Rose and the Bulls made it to the Eastern Conference Finals and their rival teams did not!

The stylish shoes make their store debut exclusively in Foot Locker and Eastbay stores October 6th, with home and away color options (black, white and red) for $110. They also plan to roll out five additional colors on December 22nd…Just in time for Christmas!

What is the first pair of shoes you remember owning?

The first pair I remember owning were see-through plastic shoes I was forced to wear to the beach when I was a kid. I hated those shoes. I felt ridiculous.

What is the first pair of shoes you bought after filming this documentary?

That’s a great question. While filming, it was torture and temptation was everywhere. But, I do remember my first pair after filming. It hit me one rainy evening in Paris. I didn’t own a pair of simple black boots. So I needed one right away. Luckily it was a Thursday night and the Galeries Lafayette are open late that day. I left my apartment and headed under the pouring rain to the Galeries. If that’s not “addiction”, what is ?!

What surprised you the most during filming? (something you found out or observed)

How affectionate women are with their shoes. They give names to their shoes, treat them like their babies and talk to them.

What kind of relationship do New Yorkers have with their shoes?

Even though New York women do as much walking as those in Paris, I think women in New York are a little more sophisticated than in Paris, so they may wear shoes during the day that French women may only wear at night.

What are some basic points you learned about women and shoes from this documentary?

Whatever shoes you decide to put on your feet, you’re conveying a message.

How did you become a director?

My first true documentary experience was when I was working on a documentary series for Sony Music. The director was pretty much absent and left it all to me and the DP [Director of Photography]. It was a documentary series about some of Sony Music’s French and Italian artists. I met some amazing people along the way and it was an amazing experience.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Marseilles, in the south of France. Then my parents moved to Los Angeles, so I was partly raised in the United States. We then went back to Paris where I went to high school. Once I graduated high school, I moved back to Los Angeles. I attended Pepperdine University. Unsatisfied by the Cali lifestyle, I moved to New York and studied journalism at Fordham University.

What shoes did you wear while directing this documentary?

When shooting during the summer, I wore mostly flip-flops or sneakers. In the winter time, I wore my all-time favorite pair of boots, which I had bought while shooting the Sony Music films. I bought these boots years ago, and they’re still my most favorite pair ever!

If you could own any collection of shoes from anybody you shot in the video, whose would you want?

Great question. I’d like to have a little bit of each one of their collections. Beth Shak’s shoe collection is to die for. But how do you pick among 1200 pairs?! You know actually, the one collection I’d like to own is the one that’s inside the Vogue closet. Because there you have everything you need footwear wise.

You weren’t a big shoe fan going in to this. How has your perception or relationship with shoes changed?

I definitely don’t slip into a pair of shoes the same way I did. I am much more conscious of what I put on my feet. I am also much more willing and eager to wear high heels. Now I can cope with the pain.

How were you approached to do this project?

I have known Thierry Daher, founder of CAID Productions, for years. I started working for him when I was still in college. Thierry had been thinking about “God Save My Shoes” for a while and he approached me two years ago, right after I finished working on the Sony Music films. We had known each other for so long that he knew our collaboration as director and producer would be a successful one. We had a lot in common, on a personal and professional level.

How do you know Monica Von Neumann?

Monica is a friend of my father’s. I had lost contact with her and when I was doing my research for “God Save My Shoes,” I had approached a PR agency whose A-list clients I knew were shoe lovers. What a surprise when I saw Monica on their client list. I hadn’t seen Monica since my late teens. I called her up and she instantly agreed to welcome me and my crew for “God Save My Shoes.” It was such a fun interview. I guess the personal connection between Monica and I really transpires in the film because Monica was so spontaneous and so comfortable. That’s what makes her among the most entertaining characters in the film.

What is your favorite pair of shoes?

A pair of extremely needle high heels Thierry Daher got me when we started production. That pair means a lot. It represents the start of “God Save My Shoes” and also my shift from hardly ever wearing any heels to worshipping my high heel shoes. It took me two years to tame them.

Julie loves Louboutin

Tell me a shoe you remember from high school.

I wore mostly sneakers in high school. I also went through a punk period so I wore a lot of Doc Martens and stuff like that. Not very feminine.

How did you decide who to feature in this doc?

In the end this film is very character-driven. The entire story relies on its characters. It’s a very intimate thing to let cameras in your shoe closet and have someone pick your brains about your shoe obsession. So I kind of had to build a personal relationship with my interviewees before I interviewed them. But when you start talking shoes, the connection establishes itself rather quickly.

Was your mom very into shoes?

My mom is a very stylish woman. I’ve always admired her sense of style. I don’t have any specific memory of her and her shoes, but I do remember that she’d take great care of her shoes. She’d polish them often and she put forms in her boots so they didn’t bend in her closet. She still does that. She would always make sure our shoes were clean and polished before we went to school. She still has an amazing style and we often go shopping together. If I need to pick a pair of shoes or outfit, most of the time I’ll turn to my mom and my sister for their opinion. I’ll turn to my father too, who may very well be the most fashion-conscious person in the family.

Do you think shoes need to be expensive to be well-made or fabulous?

Well-made, maybe. Fabulous, no! You can definitely find affordable shoes that are absolutely fabulous.
